The 2022 Toyota Tundra and Chevy Silverado 1500 Actually Tied for a Low Ranking

Given that the 2022 Toyota Tundra and the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 typically rank near one another at or near the top, it’s surprising to find them both towards the bottom of any best full-size pickup truck list for next year. So then, why are these two trucks only in fourth place according to U.S News? And behind them is only the 2022 Nissan Titan.

Also on the U.S. News list are three electric pickups; though, there is not enough information to rank them yet. The most inexpensive truck listed is the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning with a starting price of below $40,000 .then Rivian R1T coming in at $67,500 to $73,000 , and lastly General Motors’ return of Hummer as  the 202 GMC Human EV Pickup priced astronomical at over$100K

2022 Toyota Tundra

The all-new Toyota Tundra for 2022, boasting a full redesign, is an excellent truck compared to others on the market. It offers two V6 powertrains and the same 10-speed automatic transmission comes standard with both options. The first engine is a twin-turbocharged V6 that gets up to 389 horsepower and 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg highway. The second powertrain option for the Tundra is a hybrid engine that couples the twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor–totaling 437 horsepower between both engines. As you can imagine, fuel economy improves greatly with this hybrid option; however, official numbers have not yet been released by Toyota.

For the 2022 model year, the Tundra’s interior has been updated; however, it still falls short in comparison to its higher-rated competitors within its class–particularly in lower trim levels. The infotainment system that comes standard with all models consists of an 8-inch touchscreen display and a stereo system equipped with six speakers in double cab trucks or nine speakers in CrewMax models. Additional standard features include automatic climate control and power rear windows.

Although the 2022 Toyota Tundra is a decent pickup truck, it can’t tow or haul as much as its main competitors. This is due to Toyota’s decision to only offer limited engine options for the Tundra. When this Toyota is properly equipped with heavy-duty wheels and a tow package, the highest weight capacities for the Tundra are 12,000 pounds of towed weight and 1,940 pounds carried in its bed. While these numbers work for most people, they’re still lower than what other trucks in its class are able to manage.

2022 Chevy Silverado 1500

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 underwent a refresh for the 2022 model year, which included an updated interior, exterior style, and infotainment system. While this has made the Silverado more competitive, it still lags behind some of its rivals in terms of features and finishes on lower-trim levels.

The Silverado 1500 comes with several engine options, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, two gas-powered V8s, and an inline-six-cylinder turbo diesel. The 19 mpg rating for city streets and 22 mpg for highways applies to the turbocharged four-cylinder option that also has 310 horsepower from its eight speed automatic transmission.

The smaller of the two V8 options, the 5.3-liter, makes 355 horsepower while attaining a fuel economy rating of 16 city mpg and 21 highway mpg. On the other hand, the larger 6.2-liter pumps out 420 hp but only has a 1 mpg fuel economy penalty. If you’re interested in opting for the 3.0-liter straight six instead, know that it results in 277 horsepower with 23 City mpg and 31 highway . Lastly , any engine choice other than  the four – cylinder comes with a 10 – speed automatic transmission .
